Volunteer Room (pt 1)

We're working on creating a comfortable room just for you guys!  As you know, we've been serving coffee and snacks from out of the kitchen for quite some time now. But then we got to thinking... What if you had a space you could relax in? Our Jungle Jam and Outpost storytellers might need a place to rehearse lines or to sip on a cup of joe in between services. Or our tech guys might like to hang out after they're done running FOH in the Outpost while they wait for their parents to get out of service. And during C3 and VBS weeks I think we can all agree having a nice quiet room to retreat to during some down time would be nice!

We're in the very beginning stages now. We're hoping to make it look something like this (very-much-so-not-to-scale-and-poorly-designed-concept-created-in-Word) room design:

Of course, since it's not to scale, more than likely some details will change. But we're looking forward to having the space for you all!  Check back soon for some updates!

Volunteer Appreciation Party!

Last night we hosted an appreciation party for our loyal volunteers!

We gathered in the Outpost in the Children's Ministry building for a delicious Italian dinner, catered by our friends at Affordable Catering.

After dinner and some fellowship we had a ton of fun going a few rounds of Minute to Win It!

Pastor Keith then spoke to us for a few minutes about serving.  Closing out the evening was our friend Josh DeRoche who led us in a couple of worship songs.

Thanks to everyone who joined us for the fun night! It was great to spend time with you all!!

Making an Impact... A Volunteer Testimony

by: Sara Duncan, Children's Ministries Volunteer Coordinator

I have the honor of serving every Sunday alongside some pretty amazing fellow "Dogwoodians." These are people who are willing to serve God by serving others. They have a heart for helping in Children's Ministry and by doing so they get to make an impact on the lives of the children they disciple to. It's an amazing thing to witness every week!

So amazing, in fact, that I realized our Sunday mornings together are worth sharing. So here I am, starting a fresh new blog on behalf of the volunteers of Dogwood Church's Children's Ministries. I thought it would be fun to start with the testimonies of Bre and Nathan Ragsdale. They are an incredible brother and sister duo who serve... Every. Single. Sunday. Bre is 14, Nathan is 12. And they are so awesome that there are hardly words to describe them.

Inquiring minds desired to know what it was exactly that originally got them involved in our preschool ministry, Discovery Land, and what keeps them coming back. So I asked them a few questions and here's what they had to say...

Me: Bre and Nathan, how long have you guys been involved with Children's Ministries here at Dogwood?

Them: Probably about three or four months.

Me: What lead you to get involved?

Bre: I've always loved to be around younger kids. I love getting to interact with them in an environment where their parents feel safe and so do they. I just felt that I needed to help out in an area that I already loved.

Nathan: I love to help out and get involved with younger kids.

Me: What is it that you look forward to most when you wake up on Sunday mornings knowing you get to serve?

Nathan: Getting to see all the kids in my class and getting to teach them about God and Jesus. Even if it's just reading a flip book that has drool all over it.

Bre: Just seeing all the kids and making them smile. Playing with them and just being around them is honestly the highlight of my week every week.

Me: In what way have you seen your life impacted by your involvement with Children's Ministries?

Nathan: I now have a larger desire to go to church and listen to [messages] and to spread the Word.

Bre: I now have a stronger relationship with the Lord and a desire to serve and come to church every Sunday.

Me: In what way have you seen the life of a child impacted by your involvement with Children's Ministries?

Nathan: I have seen some manners and behavior changes in a lot of the children in my class. I'm not sure it's from [my involvement], but who knows.

Bre: I've seen a couple of changes in some children. One boy, when he first came to class, was a wild one. He would run out of the room and just go plain crazy. Over the past couple of months we have seen him become more polite and a lot less crazy! I've also seen a change in another boy. At first he would cry and cry when his mommy and daddy left but now he just runs into the room and either sits and plays next to me or makes me hold him. I have to admit, I'm very attached!

Me: Is there anything else you'd like to share with others who might be considering getting involved as a volunteer?

Nathan: It sucks you in and you end up wanting to come to church every Sunday so you get to see your kids. But don't come to church just to be with the kids, come to church to learn more about God.

Bre: If you're considering getting involved, go for it. In my opinion, it's the best possible way you could serve and it will change your life.
